Nusa Penida: The Most Incredible Underwater World
The most incredible underwater world I ever laid my eyes on lie in the sea between Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida! Here's why.
Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida are two tiny islands off the southeast coast of Bali, Indonesia. Very underrated and way less touristy than well-known Gili Islands which are off the northwest coast of Lombok, Indonesia. I went snorkeling in the Nusa’s and the Gili’s and it was clear which one was better. The captain of my boat said the fisherman in Lombok used to use dynamite in the water to catch fish near the Gili Islands. Which in turn, killed any and all coral reef life as we knew it. I would know, I saw it. It was like an elephant graveyard for reefs. So sad.
Back to the beauty of the Nusa’s. For $11.26, I went on a snorkel cruise to three of the most epic dives I’ve ever seen.
STOP #1: Manta Point
I was super excited to see manta rays in the wild. In fact, the manta's are the whole reason I booked this snorkel cruise. The boat brought us to an open water area with a really strong current. If you can't swim without panic, it might not be the best idea to jump in the water here. We saw many manta's, but by the time we swam over, they shook. So fast! Bummed this is the closest I got to one.
STOP #2: Crystal Bay
OMG OMG OMG! Crystal Bay is hands down the best place I've ever snorkeled in my life (so far). Insanely clear water, bright healthy coral, and the colors! The colorsssss
STOP #3: Mangrove Point
The place was pretty spectacular also. Very very shallow, the sun lights up the coral through the glassy sea water. Be careful, don't step on the coral!
